Former boxer Hal “TNT” Carroll (right), who came to Syracuse as a 16 year-old light heavyweight from Greenwood, SC and owner of Hal’s Auto Body for three decades, received the Rosemary Award at Syracuse’s Juneteenth Celebration over the weekend. Carroll was known for his crushing body blows with his left hook. He won 31 fights and traveled to the US and Europe during his career.

Coach, Somali Team
World Refugee Day also brings out some fantastic (and unique) fashion in Syracuse. This year was no exception, as the soccer tournament featured a few coaches on the sidelines with a flair for style.

An exciting pre-quarter finals game between Bosnia and Somalia
Bravo to the organizers of World Refugee Day here in Syracuse. This year organizers moved the event to Schiller Park and added a dimension of excitement with a soccer tournament featuring teams from countries represented in the city.
The tournament was the perfect addition to the event, and the idea was also ripe for a city under the spell of FIFA’s World Cup first round action.

Many of the games were decided by sudden death shoot outs

Early round match between Liberia and Burundi was all about speed.

Rosie Perez, actress
They say Father Time is undefeated…and if he is, then one person giving him a run for his money is actress Rosie Perez. Perez continues to age gracefully, 25 years after dancing onto the scene in the Spike Lee summer joint Do The Right Thing (easily one of the most audacious acting debuts ever, second only to Eddie Murphy in 48 hours)
Perez, who is a fight fan, was in the area recently to visit the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Jack Brown, keeping it real (cool)
Hollywood has Jack Black; Syracuse has Jack Brown (of Sophistafunk). Black is known for his fluffy comedic persona; meanwhile Brown is known as a vigorous MC who dons stylish pork pie hats on stage. Last weekend, Brown mixed up his fashion ensemble by rocking a pair of classic NIKE dunks (in Syracuse Orange, of course).
