Syracuse’s favorite Hip Hop/Folk singing/guitar playing/Human Beat Box,aka Joe Driscoll, closed out the Express Mart Stage for the Taste of Syracuse last night. His show caught the attention of stalwart driscollites, innocent by-standers, TV and radio personalities, as well as local musicians. The well-traveled Driscoll, who was bred in the Westcott Nation, recently played gigs in California.

While on stage Driscoll sported a Wes Johnson (Lakers) jersey. This guy always represents.

While in town Driscoll will also play shows at the Westcott Theater and Funk-n-Waffles (downtown).

Gustav Hoffman brings the beat during a CD release party for Slow Train at Empire last night.

Gustav Hoffman (bass) took the beat down a notch during the CD release party for Slow Train at Empire Brewing Company last night.  In the background is Byron Cage on drums (and Ustream controls).

We don’t know where the after party was for Syracuse Fashion Week last night, but maybe it should have been held at the Empire Brewing Company. We followed the sound of  music in Armory Square, and it lead us to the Slow Train CD release show.

A packed house included guest musicians and some familiar faces. We look forward to seeing them again soon.  Slow Train will travel to Rochester for their next show.

Thanks to Byron Cage for the invite.

Bronze statue at Libba Cotton Grove, sculpted by Sharon BuMann

Bronze statue at Libba Cotton Grove, sculpted by Sharon BuMannIt’s hard to understand the precision and detail that goes into the work of Sharon BuMann, the sculptor best known for her work at the NYS Fair (with butter) and the Jerry Rescue monument in Clinton Square.

Her latest work, a bronze of famous folk singer Libba Cotten, will be formally dedicated in a few weeks.  Here’s a piece written by columnist Sean Kirst describing Cotten’s musical influence.

BuMann was one of the first artists we featured on this site. We visited her studio about 10 years ago to watch her work. She is a great artistic ambassabor for our region and certainly a living legend.

Blended Genre

I’d heard of soul, I’d heard of bluegrass, but I’d known very little about “soulgrass” until I experienced a Bill Evans show featuring Christian Howes (fiddle) and Ryan Cavanaugh  (banjo) at this year’s Syracuse Jazz Fest.
