King Solomon Hicks, who will be in Syracuse for Jazz in the City later this week, participated in an Apollo Theater forum on Black Men and Soul Music a few months ago (along with Duke’s Mark Anthony Neal, vocalist Gordon Chambers and radio personality Gary Byrd). Syracuse-native Jimmy Cavallo returned to town to play a two-day set at the Italian Festival.

Syracuse-native Jimmy Cavallo returned to town to play a two-day set at the Italian Festival.

We got to meet Jimmy Cavallo over the weekend. On stage he plays a mean sax, and has an energetic show with great jokes for someone almost 90. During his Saturday set he talked about appearing in the film Rock, Rock!”

He later told us he was the first white rock musician (with an all white band) to play Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1956.
