Mark Burnell, at NY Jets Training Camp this week
Here’s a great story about second chances by Rich Cimini, a Syracuse University graduate, and NY Jets beat writer.
I last talked with members of Assault City Roller Derby (ACRD) a few years ago.
I saw the current version of the team last week during a home bout against the Ithaca Bluestockings at the Baldwinsville Ice Arena. The faces and names may have changed, but the ACRD game and strategy–hit first ask questions later– remains pretty much the same.
The match was filled with rough play and amazing agility, but unfortunately, the Ithaca team prevailed 202-90.
Thanks to B. Firman, E. Cherchio and J. Bolos for bringing me up to speed with this year’s team.
Former SU player Wes Johnson talked to the press after a pre-draft work-out with the 76ers a few days ago. He talked about his shooting range, his conditioning, and the fact that if he could make it in Syracuse, he could make it anywhere.

Downstate Fan
About 100 high school seniors participated in the Inaugurarl New York State High School Football Classic on Sunday. Despite a distinct home field advantage in the Syracuse University Carrier Dome, the Upstate Team couldn’t overcome the atheletic ability and strong play of the Downstate team. The final score was 36-7.

Downstate's Dave Thomas (RB) of Roosevelt High
The game featured Syracuse University recruit (QB) John Kinder, who played for Downstate.

Upstate and Corcoran High School’s Travon Burke of Syracuse was voted Most Valuable Defensive lineman of the game.

Coach Luttinger
Congratulations to CNY Gym Centre’s Jim Luttinger for being named 2010 Coach of the Year.

Turtle Clan Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, who was an all-American Lacrosse goalkeeper at Syracuse University, along with Professor Philip Arnold, former SU lacrosse/football star (and NFL player) Jim Ridlon and former SU lacrosse coach Roy Simmons, Jr. discussed the history, progression and sportsmanship of lacrosse earlier this week at Syracuse Stage.
They appeared as part of the Onondaga Land Rights & Our Common Future Educational series coordinated by Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation. Lyons talked about classic battle with Mohawk players and playing with broken ribs.
Coach Simmons insisted that lacrosse is a gentleman’s game, not a savage game and talked about the evolution of the lacrosse stick from being made with wood and animal gut to the more modern kevlar and nylon version.

Your Brain Being Washed
Media personality and executive George Kilpatrick sent me a link to his recent interview with author Tom Burrell.
Burrell is author of a book about the myth of black inferiority called Brainwashed. In the book Burrell, an award-winning ad exec, tackles subjects such as Neo-Buffoonery, King James v. King Kong, Oscar- nominated films such as Precious, Fratricide, Hip Hop videos, and the cumulative effect of negative images.
