Mix & Mingle Event at Aloft Hotel (Syracuse Inner Harbor)

Building Culture by the Water (Syracuse Inner Harbor):  Attorney Lanessa Owens (left) and Publisher Victoria Coit were among the organizers for the Minority Professionals Networking event at the Aloft Hotel.

Shout out to the organizers of last night’s Mix & Mingle event at the new Aloft Hotel at the Inner Harbor. We saw some familiar faces among the fashionable crowd. The after-work event was coordinated by Cuse Culture Magazine, UMEA and the William H. Johnson Bar Association of CNY. Hopefully in the future they can also charter a boat for a harbor/lake cruise.

Attorney Jose Perez

Attorney Jose Perez

About a decade ago Jose Perez was delivering pizzas. But these days,  the Ithaca-born, Venezuela-raised attorney is getting his clients sweet deals for personal injury, immigration and business contracts. He talked about his personal journey during an entrepreneur forum sponsored by The Upstate Minority Economic Alliance (UMEA) on Friday. The event was held at the Southside Innovation Center.

Perez also shared some business advice. Here are some of his tips for getting the most from your next negotiation:

  • Present a concrete case
  • Prepare for disputes
  • Consider unconventional deal structuring
  • Don’t be afraid to leave the table
  • Bring the big guns (use leverage when necessary)
  • Avoid quick fixes
