Donna Alford and Reggie Seigler led the Donna Alford JaSS band brought some brand new funk to the Sitrus Lounge on Friday night.

Fresh off their headline gig at Jazz in the City, The Donna Alford JaSSBand (featuring the husband/wife team of Reggie Siegler and Donna Alford) came to The Sitrus Lounge Friday and unleashed a brand new funk.  One of the highlights of their set was a Michael Jackson medley, which carefully blended “Rock with You” and “Love Never Felt So Good.”  The MJ set was so smooth we expected to see a hologram appear on stage.

Unfortunately, this was their only appearance at the Sitrus showcase this season.

Where are C-SPAN or ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” when you need them?

After a week that provided way too much negative news pertaining to male athletes and domestic violence and abuse allegations, former SU students Etan Thomas and Rachel Vassel facilitated a panel Coming Back Together (CBT) aimed at dissecting fatherhood, particularly among people of color.

The discussion featured former SU players Billy Owens, Derrick Coleman, John Wallace, Roosevelt Bouie and Lawrence Moten. The audience included students, members of the community and alumni (including members of the Syracuse Eight)

The 2-hour town-hall style meeting touched on single parent homes, solutions for raising a generation of children in the modern era, and how to discipline while still showing love.

At times the candor of the athletes spurred a range of emotions (from tears to gut-busting laughter).

All-time leading SU scorer (and in the Big East) Lawrence Moten talked about teaching the art of respect when it comes to fathering his daughters.

We are sure this conversation will continue somewhere (possibly at the next gathering) or maybe another institution will do a tangential discussion.  In the meantime we salute Etan, the other former players, and organizers of CBT for addressing the subject.

We wish they met annually.

Syracuse-native Jimmy Cavallo returned to town to play a two-day set at the Italian Festival.

We got to meet Jimmy Cavallo over the weekend. On stage he plays a mean sax, and has an energetic show with great jokes for someone almost 90. During his Saturday set he talked about appearing in the film Rock, Rock!”

He later told us he was the first white rock musician (with an all white band) to play Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1956.

Who said fashion shows weren't hard work

Who said fashion shows weren’t hard work

Leave it to the folks at Urban Life CrossFit to take fashion up a notch. Most of them took a turn to spin for the duration of last night’s Landmark Theater Window Project (60 + minutes). Afterwards, despite the high perspiration index, they posed for a photo.

This event is part of Syracuse (Fall) Fashion Week.
