King, Solazzo and Horrace at Hancock Airport.
Enough is enough. We are going to stop limiting Bill Horrace by calling him a jazz guy. Of course, he can go there, but his musical abilities and ambitions go well beyond the J-word. We’ve seen him (along with a variety of his band incarnations) play pop, folk and soul everywhere from a moving bus to storefronts downtown. In his latest cultural creation, Horrace’s band was the initial guest at the Hancock Airport Music Series, which took place this morning. He was joined by Dave Solazzo on keys and Kinyatta King on drums.
The pleasant tones seemed to put everyone in a good mood, and had airport staff and travelers bopping through the terminal. The tall, peaked ceiling provided surprisingly wonderful acoustics.
We are not sure where he’ll resurface next, but hopefully Horrace will someday lay down his version of some aquaboogie on a boat (or along the shores of Onondaga Lake).
Bill Horrace gets our vote for Central New York’s Secretary of Transportation.

The Bill Horrace Trio jams at the Crowne Plaza
The Bill Horrace Trio, the hardest working band based along Syracuse University’s Connective Corridor, began a new gig this summer, playing the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Wednesday evenings.

Bill Horrace Trio: Unplugged on Centro
The Bill Horrace Trio (aka Bill Horrace, Tom Bronzetti and Dave Solazzo) have taken a break from their Spring gig at Pheobe’s and returned to playing Centro’s Connective Corridor Route today.

Band on the Bus
Centro driver Raul Erives of Baldwinsville has been driving for 7 years, and he says he’s had musicians on his bus before (the 443 on the Connective Corridor), but never like this.

This afternoon at about 3:45 p.m., Centro, Connective Corridor and the Bill Horrace Trio combined to turn a 40-plus minute ride into a live jazz party. Many of the riders, students from Syracuse University, seemed pleasantly surprised to get on the bus as the music was playing.

According to Horrace, who plays a regular gig with his band at Pheobe’s on East Genesee Street, there was no particular playlist for the ride. Instead he and his mates, John Solazzo and Tom Bronzetti improvised and played everything from Miles Davis to Kurt Weill as the bus rolled from Midtown through Downtown and the Near West Side. This particular Centro route is free.
