Walter Hood gives the 2011 Warner Selgiman Lecture at Syracuse University
Designer, architect, artist and urbanist Walter Hood described some of nationwide design projects and the agrarian roots in modern day urbanism yesterday at SU’s School of Architecture.
Below is an excerpt form his talk, which focuses on the “Find the Rivers” project Hood did in Pittsburgh, PA. The “Rivers” geographic location is the setting for many of the plays by August Wilson called the Hill District.
Hood, who is based in Oakland CA, was in town for the 2011 Werner Seligman lecture.

Coming Back Together X (Ten) featured a forum on social networking featuring various communications professionals. The panel was moderated by Ben Green, SU ’85 and dedicated to the memory of Lee Keitt ’76.
The discussion focused on mentoring, generosity, improvements in delivery systems and social media limitations (not 100% marketing, not 100% personal).

Coming Back Together X-Cal to Action Education Forum
Syracuse University alumni returned to campus this weekend for Coming Back Together (CBT) X. Today’s CBT X schedule featured a panel discussion about “Saving Our Black and Latino Boys” at the School of Education that featured Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler, former SU Football player A. Alif Muhammad, Keith Alford, Dalia Rodriguez and Jeff Mangram. Muhammad (standing in photo above) stressed education with cultural sensitivity and warned against misrepresenting the behavior of black and Latino young men. The Syracuse University Football team held an open practice today for their Fanfest celebration. The team’s home-opener is September 1st. Above: Coach Doug Marrone and Freshman Travon Burke meet the fans and sign autographs.
Pro basketball trainer Mark Williams, a native of Queens, NY, sent us an update on his hoops enterprise called Team Footprintz. Williams has trained or collaborated with a who’s who of Big East basketball talent, including former Syracuse standout Nicole Michael.
Michael recently signed to play in the Italian pro league for next season.

Vanessa Williams, Icon of Style
Syracuse University alum, singer, actress and former Miss America Vanessa Williams was presented with the 2011 Icon of Style Award last night at JP Morgan Chase, One Chase Manhattan Plaza.
Williams, along with Coach Jim Boeheim, Chancellor Nancy Cantor, attended the event and watched a fashion show featuring the work of 12 students from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.
