Julius “Pop” Anderson floats to the basket for a lay-up in the final minute of the second half.
This is the second time they’ve met in two years, so maybe you could call it revenge that Showtime (Orange) defeated Flav’s Unit (Red) to claim the BBBL (Baby Boomers Basketball League) title at the McChesney Recreation Center yesterday. Behind the steady play of Dave Cain and Julius “Pop” Anderson, Showtime won a hard-fought, low-scoring victory 47-39. Flav’s Unit beat Showtime last season (when the league was being held at the Southwest Community Center).
The crowd, which included businessmen, families and former college athletes, seemed to route for league elder statesman Julius “Pop” Anderson.
Well maybe not everyone, since retired BBBL Commissioner James Jackson was also in the house (and his son Derrick plays for Flav).
Speculation began immediately after the game whether Anderson would return next year for another repeat title.
Surely Flav will have something to say about that…Showtime may have won this year, but this rivalry is just getting started.
Showtime point guard Dave Cain addresses the team during a time-out.
Don Crouch (center) and Flav’s Unit turned up their man-to-man defense pressure to close the gap in the second half.
Gil Spaights (Flav’s Unit) questions a close call.
Author and Jet Magazine editor Mitzi Miller spoke to students at the Newhouse School of Public Communication on Thursday. She discussed how she stewards one of the most recognized black media brands, and keeps it relevant. Miller began her journalism career as an unpaid intern at Honey Magazine.
March is Women’s History Month and we are glad The Newhouse School, under the leadership of Lorraine Branham, continues to invite seasoned publishing professionals to campus. Below Jet Magazine’s Mitzi Miller talks about her start in journalism.
Actor Jose Miguel Hernandez appeared in the theatrical memoir "From Cuba to the Cuse" Wednesday night at Syracuse University. Hernandez also performed the play at last year's Fringe Festival at CFAC.
Thanks to the many random drop-ins, friends, faithful clients, and family who visited our Midtown office over the years. We literally watched the neighborhood change around us.
The space was a great place to initiate this venture, and will remain an important part of our history.
If this post had a picture maybe it would help you believe it, but we are going to ask you to have a small amount of faith.
Today we met Colin and Alexis, two young missionaries visiting our city. They were canvassing a neighborhood helping people, offering food (from Picasso’s Cafe) and prayer. In one instance we saw them help one family shovel a driveway.
To make it more interesting, Colin and Alexis are on a school break from Florida. Can you imagine leaving 80 degrees to wear boots, gloves and shovel snow. Talk about a hospitality quotient!
If you see them give them some encouragement. Better yet, let them help you.
