Eddie Wall Street Brown and the Blacklites raised the Roof at Kirk Park last night.

There are a whole lot of funky bands in Syracuse who perform at various venues during the summer, but we wonder if any of them have as much fun as The Blacklites. It’s hard to think of Jazz in the City on the Southside, whether at Dunk & Bright, Kirk Park, or any venue in the neighborhood without thinking of the Blacklites.

The group is celebrating over 40 years of musical brotherhood.

James, guitarist for Angie Stone

At this year’s Juneteenth we had to do a double take. The guitar player for Angie Stone looked so much like Rod Little from the Blacklites…Glance again, the resemblance is uncanny.

Perseverance Park/Pike Block will be the lone destination on September 3.

Outside in the Rain: The Blacklites

Outside in the Rain: The Blacklites

After a weather-related cancellation last week, the Jazz in the City program kicked off today,  accompanied by showers. But the Blacklites, veteran showmen of Syracuse music scene, put enough funk back into the atmosphere to stop the rain.

After their first set, the skies broke for a Southside party led by the KC Cuse Line Dance group.

The Black Lites are celebrating 40 years in the music business this year. Their story is familiar to Syracuse residents, but many outside the area do not know that the group recorded a song with New England Producer Maurice Starr that later became a hit for New Edition.  They never signed with Starr due to a previous contract obligation.
