The SUNY OCC Lady Lazers continue to impress. They feature a stifling 3/4 court press and quickly move the ball with a UCLA/flex -type offense. The stat from last night’s game that stood out, however was that the three players pictured out scored the entire SUNY Broome Community College squad 42-38.

The final score was OCC 81 and Broome 38.

The team is now 21-3 overall, and undefeated in conference play. Their next game is against Jefferson Community  College.

Former Henninger coach Erik Saroney won over 200 games in Section III, including multiple championships. He has put together a great inaugural season on the other Hill behind an uptempo, pressing style that has become a trademark of his former clubs.

Behind local standouts such as Tyler Sullivan, James Walker and Quantae Elijah, OCC is now 20-6 overall and 6-2 in conference.  They defeated SUNY Broome Community College last night 111-65. Their next game is against Jefferson Community College on Friday.

Tyler Sullivan, the fan, cheers on his old team on Saturday.

Former Liverpool guard Tyler Sullivan was in the stands to cheer on his former team at the Peppino’s Tournament last night. Liverpool was thumped by Ludden in front of a packed crowd.

Today, however, Sullivan came to ball. The Onondaga Community College freshman played a solid floor game and stuffed the stat sheet with a 19 point performance in 29 minutes of action. He shot 56 percent from the field, including 2 of 4 from three, and 78 percent from the line. He also added five assists and five steals. Quantae Elijah poured in 20 points as well.

Tyler Sullivan (the baller) takes it to the hole for two in the second half of today's game at OCC.

The OCC Men defeated Clinton Community College 90-56, which put a cap on a great weekend of sports action in Syracuse, but the bigger story may have occured earlier in the day when the Lady Lazers shut down Clinton 104-30.

Some folks waste no time. Onondaga Community College’s new Provost Dr. Daria Willis has been on the job exactly one month, and she’s already making an impact. Today she met students from the Synergy internship program (Mercy Works, Inc.) at Upstate Medical University.  During her brief commencement remarks, she encouraged the students to reach for their goals and never take the any aspect of their educational opportunities lightly.

It’s always good to see new people bring new energy to existing programs (Willis is from the ATL, and got degrees from FAMU and Florida State). If you see her out and about show her some love.

Gestures like this help put the “C” in community college.

Jazz is…Respect

Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

There’s a top 10 list somewhere as to why Frank Malfitano, producer, director, talent cultivator, and cultural savant “gets it” when it comes to showing pride for Syracuse and Central New York. Bringing Chief Lyons, the statesman, onto the stage at Jazz Fest tonight is high on that list. Respect.
