Singer-song writer Lydia Caesar brought the crowd to its feet at CFAC
We’re not sure if the bass was too strong or it was the profound timbre of Lydia Caesar’s voice that caused The Community Folk Art Center to tremble on Friday. Her performance, which was co-sponsored by WAER-FM 88, was the official kick-off for Syracuse University’s Black History Month festivities. The Queens, NY-native showed her range by singing a slow-moving musical love letter she calls “St. Louis,” then moved further into the set with the bouncy “Lottery.” She also sang several covers.
The crowd seemed to appreciate her repertoire and showered her with praise.
Caesar was backed up for the visit by Syracuse’s Brownskin band.
Lydia’s new single “Through it all” will be released Feb. 10.

Visiting vocalist Lydia Caesar was a childhood friend of Community Folk Art Center Director of Education, Tamar Smithers. Smithers sang background for Caesar’s Black Month kick-off concert last night.

Here are a few of the amazing poets who ripped the stage at the 6th Annual Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) Regional Slam event on Saturday night. The event was held at the Community Folk Art Center’s (CFAC) black box theater and hosted by Syracuse’s Underground Poetry Spot.
The winning team was Nitty Gritty.

DJ Maestro, Beatmaster of the Orange (at CFAC)
Maestro definitely moves the crowd. It was good to see him on the Connective Corridor on Saturday. We hope he is a top choice when they finally do a an outdoor fashion event at Forman Park, or when the choose another artist to perform/ride the 443 Centro Bus.

Kofi Jacque aka One Black Voice
Kofi Jacque, aka One Black Voice, was the featured artist for the Community Folk Art Center’s Journey Through Music of the African Diaspora series on Thursday. He performed selections from his CD/DVD. He also talked about his trips to Africa, his work as a performer with the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company, and his collaborations with Ellen Blalock.

Syracuse Academy of Science 6th grader Raquan Pride II reminded us that maturity has to do with acceptance of responsibility, not necessarily age. Pride participated in the community dialogue at CFAC last night and his eloquent comments often brought elicited surprise and applause.
