Fantine Pritoula joined Igor Butman for a songs.
Here are some photos from Day 2 of the Syracuse Jazz Festival. Saturday started with local singer Nick Ziobro (Manlius) and ended with guitar legend B.B. King. In between, we got a chance to check out Raul Midon, the human mix machine and Igor Butman & The Moscow State Jazz Orchestra did a tune up before Igor Butman” their Monday performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Media tycoon Cathy Hughes received an honorary degree from Syracuse University in 2001. After the graduation ceremony she visited WPHR-FM studios and the show Old School Sunday with Rick Wright.

He is the co-chair for Engage CNY.
Next week GK2 will celebrate 10 years of his New Inspiration for the Nation radio program.

Hasan Stephens, aka DJ Maestro, Hip Hop Scholar and Radio Executive, during a lecture at Syracuse University earlier this year.
During recent trips to DMV-area (DC, Maryland and Virginia) and Philadelphia I had the opportunity to experience some diverse radio programming. It was particularly a treat to hear Hip-Hop pioneer Lady B doing a marvelous throw-back show called The Basement Party.
Today I read the DJ Maestro and partners will be starting an online radio vehicle that will enter the urban music market in the area. Labor Day is the launch date.
Below you can hear Maestro talk about the need for diversity in Hip-Hop music during a lecture at Syracuse University earlier this year.

Mrs. Townsend, DJ WSIV radio
Syracuse in many ways is a city of churches. I recently caught up with on-air personality Lula Townsend, who has a radio show on 1540 WSIV-AM. Her show brings the church experience to the shut-ins, retirees and those unable to make it to Sunday services.
At one time Townsend’s Classic and Traditional Gospel Hour was on three times a week, but now she’s cut back to once. Each Monday she is in the studio shuffling vinyl records, reading Bible verses to her listeners, and answering phone calls.

I’ve always enjoyed Mrs. Townsend’s show, because in addition to providing informal history lessons about Syracuse, her voice is a true echo of our city’s Southern roots.

Who inspired you: I credit Rev. Walter C. Blue who was on WSOQ radio in the 1960s.
