BBVD trumpet player Glen “The Kid” Marhevka: The Sartorialist
Fashion and music seem to go hand-in-hand.
Glen Marhevka said many of his suits he wears are styled from the 1930s and 40s (similar to his band mates), but during the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy set on Friday he wore a hand-me-down (but re-tailored) ensemble from the 1960s. He said his personal tailor is a guy named Javi in Los Angeles.
Marhevka has that certain sprezzatura historically poured onto horn players (think Chet Baker), but don’t let the cool vines fool you, he can flat out blow that horn.

Jazz critic Stanley Crouch visited Onondaga Community College about a decade ago. Crouch’s biography of sax player Charlie Parker (vol 1) is also great history of Kansas City, once called the Paris of the Plains.
Kierrah Titus combined the sophisticated with the popular during her rendition of a Beyonce tune at an open mike last week in Downtown Syracuse.
Maceo Parker was a key component in James Brown’s rhythm section. He played the Westcott Theater in Syracuse in 2009.
The film ‘Get on Up, a James Brown bio pic, will hit theaters this summer. Parker is played by Craig Robinson.
Hammer on stage at the NYS Fair (Chevy Court) with his hype dancers (circa 2009)
Syracuse.com writer Chris Baker wrote a story today talking about the greatest New York State Fair concert moments of all time.
For our taste the 2009 visit by Hammer (aka MC Hammer, aka Stanley Burrell) still reverberates near Chevy Court. On a warm, muggy night in September the artist may have been past the peak of his superpowers, but he put on a show for the ages. The Hip Hop experience featured a dozen or so dancers that nearly set the stage on fire. At one point he even invited about 50 audience members on stage with him for a finale that turned the mutha out.
Hard to believe, but the show was free (with admission to the Fair) and the seating was first come-first serve.

Jack Brown, keeping it real (cool)
Hollywood has Jack Black; Syracuse has Jack Brown (of Sophistafunk). Black is known for his fluffy comedic persona; meanwhile Brown is known as a vigorous MC who dons stylish pork pie hats on stage. Last weekend, Brown mixed up his fashion ensemble by rocking a pair of classic NIKE dunks (in Syracuse Orange, of course).

Last month British singer Katy Tiz scored a Billboard Top 100 hit; last week she performed on the Today Show; and last night she greeted fans and did an abbreviated show for Hot 107.9 FM at Destiny USA in Syracuse.
Over the Edge: Young female fans jockey for position as the boy band AJR prepared to sing in Destiny USA’s Canyon on Thursday evening.
If you were in the mall last night you couldn’t help but feel the energetic enthusiasm created by the AJR Brothers appearance and performance. The band also shared the HOT 107.9 FM stage with British pop singer Katy Tiz.
As we have stated in the past, the Canyon (which has great views from as far as 80 feet high) is becoming a great spot to see live music.
HOT 107.9 program director and on-air personality AJ interviewed the band.
