Gisele Marcus Leans In
Syracuse University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs may have saved the best speaker for this year’s Black History Month Program for the last few days. Whitman School of Management and Harvard biz school grad Gisele Marcus was the inaugural speaker for the Sankofa Lecture Series on Friday afternoon.
In addition to giving her bio and educational journey, the Harlem-born Marcus also gave her secrets to the sauce that makes up success. Some of her ingredients include: seeing the world, networking, finding sponsors (as well as mentors), fighting against injustice and getting paid what you are worth.
She also encouraged those in attendance to find their own sankofa moments in life, she added.
Marcus’s presentation, enthusiasm and pearls of wisdom were worthy of a Power Networking breakout session, Google Talk or a City Club of Cleveland forum.
Hopefully the lecture was recorded so every incoming freshman can see it; hopefully she makes it back to campus soon to share more of her story.

From Father to Homeboy
Father Gregory Boyd spoke at Le Moyne College last night to about promoting justice and using acts of service to help heal our society. He is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, which is based in California. His talk, which centered on anecdotes from his work with former gang members, was attended by community leaders, philanthropists, academicians, non-profit heads, and elected officials.

Big Sean is using his celebrity to make a difference.
We heard that rapper Big Sean recently hooked up with SU alum and NBA Hall of Fame player Dave Bing to inspire young black men in Detroit. The Sean Anderson Foundation and Bing partnered with the Ford Motor Company for this “Men of Courage” initiative.
Big Sean was the headliner for this year’s Juice Jam Festival at Syracuse University.

Nina Davuluri, Miss America 2014 spoke Syracuse University on Tuesday.
Although she is no longer the reining Miss America, Nina Davuluri continues to do the work. The four pillars of the organization are: advocacy, scholarship, style and success. Davuluri says a lot of ladies want to be Miss America, but they don’t want the job.
Beyond encouraging women to pursue careers in STEM fields, she hopes to one day be a diplomat or ambassador.
