Ricky Bell, Ron DeVoe and Mike Bivins, aka Bell Biv DeVoe, turned in a seasoned and funkdafied performance (including their smash hit “Poison”) at Chevy Court last night
Probably no of us thought that within the New Edition franchise it would be Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) who emerged as the most consistent spin-off. And to make sure we don’t forget, Michael Bivins announced during the show that in 2015 BBD would be recording a new album, going out on tour, and even doing a television project. How’s that for poison control!

Hammer on stage at the NYS Fair (Chevy Court) with his hype dancers (circa 2009)
Syracuse.com writer Chris Baker wrote a story today talking about the greatest New York State Fair concert moments of all time.
For our taste the 2009 visit by Hammer (aka MC Hammer, aka Stanley Burrell) still reverberates near Chevy Court. On a warm, muggy night in September the artist may have been past the peak of his superpowers, but he put on a show for the ages. The Hip Hop experience featured a dozen or so dancers that nearly set the stage on fire. At one point he even invited about 50 audience members on stage with him for a finale that turned the mutha out.
Hard to believe, but the show was free (with admission to the Fair) and the seating was first come-first serve.

Hilby
Sometimes the best entertainment at the New York State Fair is free.
From the first year I covered the Fair, I’ve enjoyed shows by juggler, acrobat, magician and street performer Michael Hilby.

Hilby at the 2010 New York State Fair
The self-proclaimed skinny German juggles fire, balls, and even carries a chainsaw.
Hilby always draws a crowd and always has a flair for the unordinary, punctuated with a comedian’s timing.
Hilby’s act, lasting about an hour, is worth one or two Grandstand performances (for about $50 dollars less). He reminds me of an essay from The Big Moo that says, there are three rules of life: 1) Your Attitude is Your Life; 2) Maximize Your Options; and 3) Don’t Let Seeds Stop You from Enjoying the Watermelon.
