Mercy Works, Inc.’s Teen Tech Program held their 2011 Spring graduation this week. For completing the coursework, participating students received computers that were donated by LeMoyne College. The class was sponsored by Nixon Gear. The guest speaker for the program was Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler.

Vanessa Williams, Icon of Style
Syracuse University alum, singer, actress and former Miss America Vanessa Williams was presented with the 2011 Icon of Style Award last night at JP Morgan Chase, One Chase Manhattan Plaza.
Williams, along with Coach Jim Boeheim, Chancellor Nancy Cantor, attended the event and watched a fashion show featuring the work of 12 students from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher gave tips to students at SUNY Morrisville earlier this month for the Women Ventured Women Gained program. She told them: 1) You need a vision; 2) Make no small plans; 3) Ideas without action are meaningless; 3) Hold yourself accountable and 4) Find someone to articulate for your vision.

Entrepreneur Sheila C. Johnson also participated in the panel discussion. She started her career as a teacher before co-founding BET. Johnson now heads a hospitality company that operates resorts. She is also part owner of three Washington, DC-area professional sports teams and says her media division will soon re-brand AOL Black Voices.
Johnson told SUNY Morrisville students to use creativity to communicate their vision to the world.
Award-winning entrepreneur and green business pioneer Amilya Antonetti,founder of Antonetti Soapworks and co-founder of the Lucky Napkin, gave these tips: 1) True passion is hard to describe; 2) You can’t succeed by yourself; 3) Trust your choices; and 3) Believe you are invincible.

Documentary photographer Milton Rogovin, who passed away recently, began his career as a photographer at age 48 (he was previously an optometrist). His work can be defined as a portrait of everyday life.

Vonzell Jones, Esquire
Attorney Vonzell Jones, Associate Director of the New York State Science and Technology Law Center, speaks to students at Corcoran High School during a recent W.E.B. DuBois Society lecture series.
Jones, who specializes in intellectual property law, recommended proper preparation, tenacity and strategic mentorship to attain educational and career goals.
