Great Expectations was showing inside, but outside Syracuse Stage this musician was giving theater goers a melodious prelude.
Selina Albright and Jackiem Joyner
One of our correspondents, LEM J, captured this photo during Saturday’s Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival (Delaware). The festival also included some of the artists who made sweet music in Syracuse this summer, such as Nick Colionne and Gerald Veasley.
We look forward to experiencing the musical synergy of Joyner and Albright at the CNY Jazz Black History Month Cabaret.
Special thanks to Denny Santangini.
We found out this week that Jackiem Joyner will return to his hometown of Syracuse for CNY Jazz’s 21st Season.
Joyner will perform in Syracuse with Selina Albright for the CNY Jazz Black History Month Cabaret. Later this month he will appear at the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival.
Walter Beasley
Gerald Veasley (left) and Walter Beasley jammed at the New York State Fair on Saturday night.
This was a week of returns here in Syracuse: The return of Nuf Said (Jazz in the City); the return football season; the return of Dr. Marc Lamont Hill to speak at SU, but maybe our favorite was the return of bassist Gerald Veasley. Veasley came to throw down for the FunkFest 2k16 (New York State Fair) with a band of musical titans, including Chuck Loeb and Walter Beasley.
Beasley came down from Boston, while Loeb made his way to Syracuse from Spain.
Veasley was last in town for the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival in Clinton Square in 2013.
Beasley will play the Howard Theater in DC next month, and Loeb played the Low Country Jazz Festival in SC today.
Elan Trotman went down on bended knee in his return to Syracuse yesterday for the Jazz in the City series. He shared the stage with keyboardist Brian Simpson, as well as Rochester musicians Corey Owes and Carlton Wilcox. The show shut down a portion of Park Avenue and overflowed the parking lot of Strada Mia 313.
WAER media personality Eric Cohen primed the crowd for the return of Elan Trotman.
Elan Trotman signed CDs during last year’s Jazz in the City (Northside). He is pictured here with Syracuse’s Bobbie Jean Willis. Trotman will play tonight with Brian Simpson at Strada Mia 313.
Sam Kinninger played at the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival’s World Beat Pavilion last night.
It seems Lettuce and Soulive sax player Sam Kinninger is popping up all over the area. He played with The Dave Matthews Band at the Lakeview, and last night we saw him jamming with Brownskin in the World Beat Pavilion for the Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival. Believe it or not, we first met Kinninger when he had a gig in Hanover Square back in the day when the Jazz & Wine Festival was known as Jazz in the Square. He invited us into his show (at a bar) and we’ve been following him ever since.
Andrew Gould and Nuf Said will bring their brand of Brooklyn Boheme back to the Syracuse during a gig for Jazz in the City (September). This photo is from their 2015 performance in Clinton Square (Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival).
