The O Effect: A visit to Syracuse University by Oprah Winfrey stopped traffic along Waverly Avenue and had people taking a longer than usual lunch break to hear her remarks about the opening of The Dick Clark Studio wing of Newhouse.

Misterwives,featuring lead singer Mandy Lee, got a great send off today from the students during Juice Jam 2014. The band was the opening act for the music festival (which celebrated it’s 10th year).  Tomorrow Misterwives will make their national television debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in L.A.

Comedian and television writer Larry Wilmore visited the Newhouse School to discuss his career last week. Wilmore’s resume includes ‘The Facts of Life,  ‘In Living Color,’ ‘The Office,’ ‘Sister Sister,’ ‘The Bernie Mac Show,’ and he is currently the senior black correspondent for ‘The Daily Show.’ He was interviewed by SU Professor Charisse L’Pree. In the clip below, Wilmore talks about the ‘Bernie Mac Show’ and the influence of technology.

Jackie Robinson, a pioneer in television journalismIn NYC yesterday she was honored along with with legendary journalists such as Mike Wallace and Len Berman. Tonight, Hall of Fame journalist Jackie Robinson was the honoree at a community celebration for her retirement here in Syracuse.  The roster of speakers and honors included representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Syracuse University, the Newhouse School, community leaders and the Onondaga County Legislature.

She was called out for being not only a great role model, but also a community activist and a great mother and wife.

The celebration will continue tomorrow when a portion of James Street will be named in Robinson’s honor (Jackie Robinson Way).
