Republican
challenger Joanie Mahoney's campaign gained momentum during
the late weeks of the election and truly challenged
incumbent Mayor Matt Driscoll.
With
numerous issues facing the city, dozens of debates and
candidate appearances on television and in local
neighborhoods, this soon became one of the closest races for
mayor of Syracuse in nearly a century.
Mahoney
was trying to become the first female mayor of Syracuse, and
ran under the message of "Expect More."
