April
25 (SYRACUSE)-- Syracuse University's Newhouse School of
Public Communication was the setting for "Defining US:
Civil Rights and the Press" symposium yesterday.
Veteran journalists (seated left to right) Phyl Garland,
Richard Valeriani, Jack Nelson, Haynes Johnson and
Ernest Withers appeared on a panel titled "Killing Jim
Crow: The 1964 Civil Rights Act." This discussion
afforded each an opportunity to share their experiences and
what they learned covering marches, mayhem, murders, and the
mood in the South during this intense period of social
change in our country's history.
