OUR AMBASSADOR TO THE
UNIVERSE
(Nov. 10) --Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ph.D., probably America's most
recognizable astrophysicist, and director of the Hayden
Planetarium, spoke at Syracuse University last night about our
connectivity with the universe. He also discussed fallacies of
science perpetuated by the media.
Before his lecture we were able have a brief conversation with him
about his work and the future of our planet.
When asked about what it
would take to get people more interested in the cosmos, his answer
was simple: "I don't have to work too hard to get people
interested in the study of the universe," he said. "I
see myself as a facilitator of a pre-existing curiosity."
Dr. Tyson also mentioned philosophically unsettling, but
inevitable concepts such as the threat of asteroid collisions with
the earth and the eventual death of the universe.
Dr. Tyson is also host of Origins, four-part NOVA series on PBS
and author of the memoir "The Sky is not the Limit:
Adventures of and Urban Astrophysicist." He visited SU
for the 2004-05 University Lecture series.
